Hello All:: Online registration is now open for the First
International Workshop on 'Web GIS and Ecoinformatics' at the Indian
Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala, in the
Software Technology Park of Trivandrum, India from Oct 28 to 30, 2008
organized by the Dept of Geology, Government College, Kottayam,
Nattakom, Kerala, India in collaboration with the Stuttgart University
of Applied Sciences, Stuttgart, Germany, IIITM-K, Trivandrum, Kerala,
India and Stuttgart Active Alumni Group. The registration fee is Rs.
500.

This workshop on 'Web GIS and Ecoinformatics' is the first in a series
of international workshops in the general area of 'Applied
Geoinformatics for Society and Environment' envisaged by the Stuttgart
Active Alumni Group. The workshop focusses on harnessing Free and Open
Source Software to leverage the power of the internet in GIS analysis,
presentation, and public participation in mapping. Participants can
hope to come away with a deep understanding of the latest technologies
that are currently being used internationally in Internet GIS and
desktop GIS in general, with lectures by some of the key European
practitioners of these tools today. Some topics that would be dealt
with are:

(1) Geostatistical and spatial analyses using the powerful 'R'
software will be compared to ArcGIS' capabilities. The participants
will have the possibility to work with some of the spatial tools in a
guided case study.
(2) Maptools, gstat and spatstat would be demonstrated. The Free GIS
endeavour gvSIG (developed by Generalitat Valenciana, Sistema
d'Informació Geogràfica of Spain) from the JUMP (Java Unified Mapping
Platform) family, including Raster Pilot and SEXTANTE tools for
spatial analysis will be used to handhold participants through the use
and power of Free Mapping Software.
(3) Geospatial webs: Google Maps, NASA World Wind, Google Earth and
Microsoft Live Local 3D.
(4) Google Maps Client
(5) OpenLayers
(6) OpenStreetMap

The DAAD-supported key workshop lecturers are:

(1) Prof Franz-Josef Behr of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Franz-Josef Behr,
Professor of Geoinformatics in the Faculty of Geomatics, Computer
Sciences and Mathematics, at Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences,

(2) Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietrich Schröder, Professor for Geoinformation
Systems, Database Systems, Programming and Urban Land Use Planning at

(3) Mr. Sajid Pareeth, Geospatial Consultant, and alumnus of Stuttgart
University of Applied Sciences (formerly with ATREE, Bangalore) will
assist the professors in their lectures.
