You could look at using gmane or, mail-archive.com like services to
detach the archive from the list hosting service you select.

That is a bit of a pain really. I've tried doing that for a couple of
lists I ended up being admin/moderator for and 3 years later I'd
believe that getting someone else to do that task is a peaceful way to
exist. The other point is that currently you have a single (or,
perhaps a bit more than that), if the number of niche-lists increase
there would be admin hassle.

Yes. Unfortunately most lists forget that when migrating.
