Sorry. I think the solution I posted above will not work.
It is a general bug of Unity-3D + IBus. See the link
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/880876

The last comment in that thread said logging in with
Unity-2D will be a workaround in the mean time, and it 
worked for me.
