You must have figured it out by the time you read this mail.
When you manually compiled the kernel, the initrd was not generated. Since
there's no initrd the 10_lupin

helper script discarded the new kernel while running update-grub.
All you need to do now is generate the ramdisk image (fedora tutorial
<http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/14/html/Deployment_Guide/sec-Verifying_the_Initial_RAM_Disk_Image.html>
uses dracut <http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/man8/dracut.8.html>
for the purpose) and then update-grub.
