While I agree it is confusing to a newbie to decide on a distro, I think
having a variety of distros give people the choice to choose another one in
case one distro didn't pan out to be good.

Nowadays, I am recommending LMDE to newbies (who are just moving out of the
Windows). Heard Elementary OS is also a good one to start with (I recently
tried it out and found it to be visually pleasing. Don't know much about
functionality/stability though).

For you, I think Debian (as I said in my previous mail) or Arch (would
satisfy your need of 'configurable' to a great extend) would be suitable. :)
