GNUKhata is a free accounting and inventory software, a project in<br>
progress at Comet Media Foundation, Mumbai with support from the<br>
National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).<br>
<br>
A large number of organisations, both commercial and non-commercial<br>
are shifting their ICT implementations to Free and Open Source<br>
Software (FOSS). There are various reasons for this trend, some of the<br>
most prominent being huge cost savings, freedom to customise the<br>
software, not to mention the virus free nature of the GNU/Linux free<br>
Operating System (OS).<br>
<br>
However at the level of enterprises there has been a major stumbling<br>
block holding up such switch-overs. Free software lacks good<br>
accounting and financial software comparable to commercial ones.<br>
GNUKhata aims to fill this gap by providing a complete flexible<br>
accounting and inventory software which is also free of any software<br>
license charges.<br>

GNUKhata can be deployed by anyone needing to keep track of accounts:<br>
individuals, profit-making and non-profit organisations. This<br>
lightweight FOSS-based accounting software is robust and scales up to<br>
large volumes of data. GNUKhata has a modular structure, facilitating<br>
addition of extensions for different tasks.<br>
<br>
The user interface is designed to be intuitive and friendly for<br>
beginners. Deployers will find the implementation easy, due to its<br>
dynamic deployment user interface. The advantage of the software is<br>
that it will support a wide range of services such as point of sales<br>
operations and tracking of multiple small transactions. It is<br>
conceived as a package which will cater to the accounting needs of<br>
both the corporate and social sectors.<br>

Currently GNUKhata is under heavy development as its timeline at<br>

Inventory and Accounting modules both reaching the end of the first<br>
production cycle and we are now ready to share the Release Candidate<br>
with you.<br>

GNUKhata is released by Comet Media Foundation under the GNU General<br>
Public License version 3. For details on GNU General Public License<br>

states that the software can be freely used, modified and<br>

In the long run, GNUKhata aims to be a comprehensive accounting and<br>
financial software possessing a unique feature: a peer-to-peer (P2P)<br>
deployment framework which can help non-technical users to perform<br>
case studies and do implementations at their places of work, using<br>
existing modules.<br>

Projecting into the future, our wish list includes creating web-based<br>
clients and mobile front ends and auto bug-tracking systems. These are<br>
easily do-able given the fact that the core system has been developed<br>
as a middle layer service which provides uniform interfaces for all<br>
kinds of front-ends.<br>

Doubtlessly, many innovative ideas will emerge once users get their<br>
hands on GNUKhata, and the platform-independent nature of the system<br>
architecture will open out a myriad possibilities. This is the<br>
rationale for the early release: that the constructive feedback<br>
generated by people like you will lead to a stable release soon.<br>
