Rachana or Meera are best fonts for GNU/Linux. Use the the g01 or g02 versions
To install a font :
in nautilus type fonts:///
You will get fonts folder. Paste the font there
Close and open the gedit or whatever application you are using.
Note:The new font will not appear in the Fonts folder until you next
log in. You will need to relaunch applications for them to have access
to the new font. These are known bugs in Gnome.
