Things aren't any better - the next generation filesystem that will be
used by almost all such devices will be exFAT [1]. M$ sells it with
royalty charges in the order of millions. There's already an
implementation of exFAT driver for Linux kernel which works perfectly
so far, but no one knows whether it will be accepted in mainline or
when.
