The solution proposal to use Type1 fonts instead of TTF/OTF fonts
doesn't suit - this was the approach of MKII. MKIV can already use the
TTF/OTF fonts using 'simplefonts' module. We would need to find a way
to do shaping for Indic languages in the core of MKIV. Also note that
Lua is used not for font metrics, it is the scripting language used in
MKIV to do pretty much everything.

You can find additional information from the ConTeXt garden wiki,
documentation that comes with ConTeXt and in ConTeXt mailing list. You
will find a lot of useful information in the new (beta) manual at
http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/fonts-mkiv.pdf
