(I am not sure if the discussion is off-topic for this specific list).
The interesting bit is the conflation of public service and utilities.
Social networks tend to provide a wide gamut of value to their users.
The downside is that the users who choose to partake of that value
mistake the networks as utilities ie. cannot be done without.
