This issue is fixed and pushed upstream. Can you test it and let me
know whether it works?
You need to build the ttf from source and install the new one. General how to:

1. clone the repository:    git clone git://git.sv.gnu.org/smc/fonts.git
2. build the ttf:    cd fonts/; ./generate.pe Meera/Meera.sfd
3. install the new ttf:   sudo install -m 0644 Meera/Meera.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/<location_of_smc_fonts>/; sudo fc-cache -f
4. Test in KWrite/Kate or other Qt 4.x apps
