കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഇന്ന് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാര്‍ മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന സാധനമാണോ ?
ജനങ്ങള്‍ എന്നത് കൊണ്ട് ഇംഗ്ളീഷ് നന്നായി അറിയാവുന്ന ഒരു മലയാളിയെ ആണോ
ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത് ? ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഉള്ള വാക്കുകള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതില്ലെ
ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രിയങ്കരമാകുക ?

കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറീനും റേഡിയോയ്ക്കും ടീ വിക്കും ഒക്കെ ആരെങ്കിലും മലയാളം
കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചോ ? ആരും കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചില്ല. പക്ഷെ അവയെ
പ്രവര്‍ത്തിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിധം നമുക്ക് ഇംഗ്ളീഷിന്റെ സഹായമില്ലാതെ
എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ മലയാളത്തില്‍ പറയാന്‍ പറ്റുന്നുണ്ടല്ലോ ? അതുകൊണ്ടാണ്
നമ്മള് ലൈറ്റും ടീ വിയും ഒക്കെ അണയ്ക്കുന്നത്. അതുപോലെ ഉള്ള വാക്കുകള്‍
കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിന്റെ ലോകത്തും നമുക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കാം. അത് തന്നെയാണ്
ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും സൗകര്യം. നമുക്ക് ഏച്ചുകെട്ടില്ലാതെ പറയാന്‍
പറ്റുമെങ്കില്‍ വെറുതെ മാധവനെ എമ്മേ ധവാന്‍ ആക്കണോ ?

To explain, it all boils down to who is the common factor - a bunch of
people who can handle both the languages comfortably, or people who
will be more comfortable in Malayalam. Once again, this is a general
practice adopted by other popular languages as well. Why scoff it
because you feel uncomfortable about applying Malayalam to a context
that you have seen predominantly in an English context ?

I think using a Malayalam desktop for a few days will give you an idea
about the issue ( if there is any) here. You'd feel that the words
that generally describe actions are not suitable if they are ported
over from another language like English - especially when thinking of
Malayalam alternatives requires no effort and comes naturally. Hence
Words like "Workspace" becomes പണിയിടം in a Malayalam context and
feels natural. Whereas "വര്‍ക്ക്സ്പേസ് " will be cumbersome at best.

People who are not comfortable handling English feels more at home in
a Malayalam desktop and they have no issues navigating it. I
introduced somebody who was not that comfortable handling English to a
Malayalam desktop, and she was delighted. The "English words being out
of context in a Malayalam desktop" idea was derived from her usage.
While she was learning how to use a computer, she actually wrote down
a few things in a piece of paper and had that next to the PC that had
scribblings like "അണയ്ക്കണമെങ്കില്‍ ഷട്ട്ഡൗണ്‍ ഇല്‍ ഞെക്കണം" Wouldn't
it have been so much easier if it was just "നിര്‍ത്തിവെക്കുക"

I think Santhosh and others were trying to say this as well.  Please
do not let this discussion turn you away from contributing in any
capacity.

As for link and the policy, its more of a general consensus rather
than a strictly enforced policy. The fact that we have a discussion on
it itself is in evidence for that.
